Udon Thani expo budget questioned as minister cites economic benefits
Organisers forecast up to 3.6 million visitors, while the status of a proposed ฿250 million spending increase remains unclear.

A proposal to add ฿250 million to spending on the Udon Thani International Horticultural Expo 2026 has drawn scrutiny, prompting Thailand’s Deputy Agriculture Minister Watcharaphon Khaokham to cite its anticipated economic benefits. Government projections suggest economic value exceeding ฿20 billion.
The expo’s initial allocation was reportedly ฿2.5 billion. The proposed extra funding covers publicity, management and activities, but its procurement status remains unclear after a report said the proposed contract had been cancelled on October 26.
Watcharaphon linked the spending recommendation to requirements from the International Association of Horticultural Producers, which authorised Thailand to host. He also said supervision of the Department of Agriculture did not fall directly to him.
The exhibition is scheduled for November 1 through March 14, 2027, at Nong Dae wetland in Kut Sa subdistrict, Mueang Udon Thani district. Horticulture and agricultural technology will feature alongside activities that vary during the event. Watcharaphon put construction at about 90% during his visit, with a final inspection scheduled for October 30.
Government forecasts put attendance at 3.6 million and potential job creation at approximately 81,000. They also project economic circulation exceeding ฿32 billion and tax revenue of around ฿7.7 billion. Watcharaphon cited private-sector estimates of benefits for hotels, restaurants, transport and other businesses.
The ministry intends to keep the grounds as a permanent public park and a location for international events. It plans to seek Cabinet consent for the Udon Thani Provincial Administrative Organisation to take over management.
