Lufthansa has restored nonstop services between Kuala Lumpur and Frankfurt following an absence of nearly a decade. The German airline plans to expand the route from five weekly flights to a daily service under its summer 2027 schedule.

The route uses a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner with 287 seats and the airline's Allegris cabin, with business, premium economy and economy seating.

Speaking at the inaugural flight's arrival at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1, Lufthansa Group senior vice president global sales Frank Naeve said the connection would support business and trade. He also said freight carried through Lufthansa Cargo was important to the passenger service's economics.

Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) said KLIA now has direct services to five European destinations, operated by five airlines. Passenger traffic on the airport's European routes reached 1.1 million during the first nine months of 2026, a year-on-year increase of 29.7 per cent.

MAHB managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani said the Frankfurt connection would help high-value exports reach Europe from Malaysia's manufacturing centres. He noted that Germany was Malaysia's biggest trading partner within the European Union.

Deputy Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Chiew Choon Man said European visitor arrivals totalled 1.18 million between January and August 2026, rising 1.2 per cent from 1.16 million a year earlier. Of those arrivals, 116,824 were from Germany. He said Malaysia wanted to expand its reach in Europe and encourage visitors to stay longer.
