Potager, the Kuala Lumpur restaurant of Japanese chef Masashi Horiuchi, has received its first star in Michelin's guide to Kuala Lumpur and Penang. Nine restaurants elsewhere in the two cities retained their ratings.

The kitchen uses French culinary methods to prepare ingredients gathered from around Malaysia. Its name means “own garden”, a reference to its sourcing relationships with local farmers.

Horiuchi previously served as a sous chef at London's L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon, working with Joel Robuchon. The Star reported that he welcomed the award and thanked his staff, management, diners and local farmers for their support.

Kuala Lumpur's other one-star restaurants are Molina, Chim by Chef Noom, Beta, DC by Darren Chin, Terra Dining and Akar Dining. Penang's Au Jardin and Auntie Gaik Lean's Old School Eatery also retained one star.

Darren Teoh's Dewakan in Kuala Lumpur continues to hold two stars, a distinction no other Malaysian restaurant has.

Michelin says inspectors consider ingredient quality, technical skill, flavour harmony, the chef's personality expressed through the food, and consistency throughout the menu and over time.
