Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung plans to turn Pasar Baru in Central Jakarta into a round-the-clock food tourism destination once MRT construction reaches the Monas-Harmoni area. He cited South Korea’s Myeongdong as a model for the proposed hub.

Pramono said the proposal forms part of the Jakarta administration’s effort to create more centres of activity, giving residents alternatives to Blok M. He envisages Pasar Baru being linked with other themed destinations, including Glodok Chinatown and Kota Tua, with each area developed around its own attractions and identity.

Glodok’s development would place greater emphasis on Chinese traditions, he said. Kota Tua would have a separate concept aimed at middle- and upper-income visitors, supported by buildings and restaurants with particular themes.

Pramono said he hoped the plans could be realised alongside the expansion of Jakarta’s public transport system, particularly the MRT extension towards Kota Tua. He did not specify how much funding would be allocated to the proposed 24-hour food tourism hub in Pasar Baru.
