Passenger movements at Singapore’s Changi Airport increased by 0.4 per cent from a year earlier to 17.4 million in the quarter ending September 30, operator Changi Airport Group (CAG) said on October 19. Cargo throughput grew faster, reaching 574,000 tonnes, an 8 per cent rise.

CAG linked the cargo increase to demand for imports and exports, highlighting shipments of semiconductors and electronics related to artificial intelligence. China was its largest airfreight market, followed by the US, Australia, Hong Kong and India.

On the passenger side, CAG identified Europe, North-east Asia and the South West Pacific as the principal contributors to growth. The quarterly total exceeded the preceding quarter’s 17.2 million movements, while aircraft landings and departures increased 2.5 per cent to 93,900.

China ranked first among passenger markets, ahead of Indonesia, Australia, Malaysia and India. Vietnam led growth within the top 10 markets at 20.5 per cent; China’s increase was 10.4 per cent.

Kuala Lumpur topped the route rankings, followed by Jakarta, Denpasar in Bali, Bangkok and Shanghai. Of the 10 busiest routes, Tokyo grew fastest at 5.2 per cent, with Melbourne next at 5.1 per cent.

Four airlines began passenger services at Changi during the quarter: Oman Air, Sun PhuQuoc Airways, AirBorneo and 9 Air.
