Thailand wearies of junta rule, election promise still vague

May 21, 2018

BANGKOK — Four years after seizing power, Thailand's junta has a singular success it never hoped for: uniting a politically divided nation in growing dissatisfaction with the thin-skinned rule of the generals. After rifle-toting soldiers overthrew Thailand's elected government in a bloodless coup in May 2014, the new military leaders, like a succession of Thai coup makers before them, pledged reform and reconciliation and promised they wouldn't stay long. But after repeatedly delaying elections, frustration with the junta and its leader, former army chief Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha, is visibly growing. And far from stepping back, they appear to be...

Honda, Kagawa named to Japan squad for Ghana friendly

May 21, 2018

TOKYO — New Japan coach Akira Nishino named Keisuke Honda and Shinji Kagawa on Friday to Japan's squad for an international friendly on May 30 against Ghana in Yokohama. Japan is expected to name its final 23-man squad for the World Cup on May 31, several days ahead of the June 4 deadline. The two had struggled to make the team under former coach Vahid Halilhodzic. But Nishino made it clear they are critical. "You all probably know their play well, and they're vital to the national team," Nishino told reporters. "I hope they will maintain their performance and contribute."...

Toyota chief hopes to help Japan automakers keep tech edge

May 21, 2018

TOKYO — Toyota Motor Corp. chief Akio Toyoda, tapped to head the Japanese auto industry association, promised Friday to lead a push among manufacturers to keep a competitive edge in emerging technologies such as zero-emission and autonomous driving. Japanese companies are among the world's top automakers, but some are worried whether they can maintain that lead amid major technological shifts that allow the entry of newcomers, including those outside the auto sector. Toyoda, the new chairman of the 14-member Japanese Automobile Manufacturers Association, acknowledged that new competitors have plentiful cash and tend to be quick. He did not give examples,...

Study says China-backed dam in Cambodia would destroy Mekong

May 21, 2018

BANGKOK — A Chinese-backed plan for Cambodia to build the Mekong River's biggest dam would destroy fisheries that feed millions and worsen tensions with Vietnam, the downstream country with most to lose from dams on the waterway, according to a three-year study commissioned by the Cambodian government. The report, posted this month on the website of the U.S.-based organization that conducted the study, said the Sambor dam would "generate large power benefits to Cambodia, but at the probable cost of the destruction of the Mekong fishery, and the certain enmity of Vietnam." It said the dam designed by China Southern...

China rejects appeal on behalf of Nobel Prize winner's widow

May 21, 2018

BEIJING — China on Thursday rejected an appeal from dozens of writers and artists for the release from house arrest of the widow of Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiaobo. Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang told reporters that Liu Xia's right to travel was an issue for the Chinese government alone to determine. "It is a matter falls within China's judicial sovereignty. She is a Chinese national (and) we of course handle the relevant issue in accordance with our laws and regulations," Liu said at a regularly scheduled news conference. Lu's comments came after writers and artists including South African...
